The Mattsee Castle was built around 1100 by bishops from Passau in the middle of an ice age-shaped landscape. They chose the mountain surrounded by water on three sides, which protrudes into the Mattsee like a spur. In 1398 the castle and the manor were sold to the Salzburg Archbishopric. In 1597, a plague raged in the city of Salzburg, which prompted Archbishop Wolf-Dietrich to withdraw to Mattsee Castle. In the recent past the castle changed hands several times until it was acquired by the Mattsee community in 1949. In 1996 the extensive renovation based on original plans began.

The castle is the ideal starting point for discovery hikes along the Mattsee. The Millennium Trail around the Schlossberg provides information boards with lots of information about the local natural and cultural history. The Mattsee Abbey and the Abbey Museum are also worth a visit. Use the parking facilities at the lido or in Weyer Bay. Today the castle café with winter garden and castle terrace as well as several event halls are located in the Mattsee castle. The extraordinary ambience and the fantastic location offer the ideal place to enjoy life.
